Soil Science
The soil and water testing laboratory at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dakshna Kannada, Mangalore is working for the benefit of the farmers by analyzing soil for available nutrients and water for suitability of irrigation. The laboratory is well equipped with several modern equipments for analysing nutrients in soil and also to assess quality of water for irrigation purpose.
The laboratory provides information on soil testing, fertilizer recommendation, reclamation of problematic soils, compost preparation, and waste recycling for maximizing the productivity by maintaining soil health. It also facilitates training on soil health, soil and water testing for different targeted groups.
Soils of Dakshina Kannada District
The soils of Dakshina Kannada district are alluvial soils, laterite soils, red laterite soil, sandy loam soils and red loamy soils.
The zone receives an annual rainfall of about 3000 mm and above, with hot humid climatic condition. The soils were formed from red lateritic and hydroxy oxides of iron and aluminium parent material are acidic in nature. The parent material and climatic condition is favourable for the development of acid soils.
Soil fertility status of Dakshina Kannada district
Soils analyzed results in the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, D.K., Mangaluru revealed that the soil available nitrogen ranged from low to medium; available phosphorus ranged from low to medium and potassium is medium to high.
